In a dominant display of cricket, Biratnagar Kings defeated Chitwan Rhinos by a commanding 51 runs in the Nepal Premier League (NPL) at the Tribhuvan University International Cricket Ground in Kirtipur on Friday. This win was crucial for the Kings, as it gave them a much-needed boost in their bid to reach the playoffs.
Biratnagar Kings Set a Challenging Total
After winning the toss, Biratnagar Kings elected to bat first, but their decision was immediately put to the test. The Kings faced an early collapse, losing two wickets in the very first over. Lokesh Bam was dismissed for a duck in the opening over, and Dipak Bohara followed soon after, scoring just four runs. At 4-2, Biratnagar was in deep trouble, and their batting order was under intense pressure.
The situation worsened as Scott Edwards was dismissed for a golden duck, leaving Biratnagar at a dismal 10-3. However, the experienced Martin Guptill and Basir Ahamad played an essential role in stabilizing the innings. The duo put together a crucial partnership of 88 runs, with Guptill scoring 45 off 35 balls and Ahamad contributing a brilliant 68 not out off 44 balls. Ahamad’s powerful hitting, including four boundaries and two sixes, injected momentum into the Kings’ innings.
By the 14th over, Biratnagar had reached 98-4, and the partnership between Ahamad and Rajesh Pulami took the game away from Chitwan. Pulami’s rapid-fire 33 not out off 20 balls added a much-needed finish to their innings. In the final overs, the pair added 83 unbeaten runs, guiding the Kings to a strong total of 181-5 in their allotted 20 overs.
Chitwan Rhinos’ Struggle in the Chase
Chasing a challenging target of 182, Chitwan Rhinos got off to a poor start. Hassan Eisakhil was trapped lbw by Ahamad for just 5 runs, and Santosh Karki (28 off 25 balls) was dismissed after being caught by Ahamad off Sandeep Lamichhane, leaving the Rhinos at 56-2. The situation worsened when Ravi Bopara was dismissed for 20 off 24 balls by Subash Bhandari, and Kushal Malla (25) fell to Chris Sole, reducing Chitwan to 64-4 in the 11th over.
Chitwan’s chances dwindled further as Basil Hameed was dismissed for just 1, leaving them in a precarious position at 64-5. Amar Routela fought valiantly with a defiant knock of 42 off 29 balls, but his efforts were not enough to carry the team across the line. After Routela was dismissed with the score at 129-6, the result was all but sealed.
In the end, Chitwan Rhinos could only manage 130-6, falling short by 51 runs. Biratnagar’s bowlers, led by Lamichhane and Ahamad, kept the pressure on throughout the chase, ensuring a comfortable victory for their side.
Implications for the Teams
This victory marks Biratnagar’s second win in the NPL. With 4 points from six matches, they have kept their slim hopes of making it to the playoffs alive. The Kings will look to build on this momentum in their upcoming matches as they aim to secure a spot in the top four.
On the other hand, Chitwan Rhinos suffered their third defeat in six matches, which significantly harms their chances of making the playoffs. With six points from six matches, Chitwan remains in fourth place, and their next few games will be crucial to their aspirations.
As the NPL progresses, both teams will need to regroup and focus on their remaining fixtures to make a strong push for the playoffs.
