In an exciting development for Nepal’s business landscape, Himalaya TV is set to introduce the country’s own version of the globally acclaimed show Shark Tank. The network made the official announcement at a ceremony in Kathmandu on Monday, marking a significant milestone for the nation’s entrepreneurial ecosystem.
Meet the Sharks
The first season brings together some of Nepal’s most prominent business leaders as “sharks”:
- Hem Raj Dhakal – Co-founder of IME Group
- Cabinet Shrestha – Managing Director of Agni Group
- Ritu Singh Vaidya – Managing Director of Vaidya Group
- Anand Bagaria – Managing Director of Nimbus Holdings Pvt Ltd
- Saurabh Jyoti – Director of Padma Jyoti Group
Additionally, two guest sharks will join the panel in future seasons, adding fresh perspectives to the mix.
A Long-Awaited Launch
According to Shyam Kandel, Himalaya TV’s Executive Director, while the agreement with Sony was secured three years ago, various challenges including the COVID-19 pandemic and economic downturn delayed the show’s launch. However, this waiting period has only heightened anticipation for what Kandel describes as more than just a show – it’s a beacon of hope for Nepal’s business future.
Investment and Impact
The sharks have collectively pledged between Rs 350-400 million for investment in promising ventures. This substantial commitment underscores the show’s potential to transform Nepal’s startup ecosystem. As shark Hem Raj Dhakal noted, the program aims to inspire youth toward entrepreneurship, while Cabinet Shrestha emphasized its potential to elevate Nepali businesses to new heights.
How to Participate
Entrepreneurs keen to pitch their ideas can submit applications through Himalaya TV’s app and website until January 15. The show will feature five entrepreneurs per episode, with a total of 100 pitches across 20 episodes. Participants must be prepared to offer equity or consider debt financing in exchange for investment.
Production Details
Under the direction of Simosh Sunuwar, known for Himalaya Roadies, filming is scheduled to commence in mid-February at Everest Hotel in New Baneshwar. Viewers can expect to see the first episode within three months of filming.
The launch event was made even more special with video messages from Sony Television London’s executive director and representatives from Shark Tank India, extending their best wishes to this new venture.
This adaptation of Shark Tank represents more than just entertainment – it’s a structured platform designed to nurture and celebrate entrepreneurship in a country rich with potential but historically lacking in scalable opportunities for emerging businesses.
