In a dominant display of batting prowess, Pokhara Avengers secured a record-breaking 10-wicket victory over Lumbini Lions in the Nepal Premier League (NPL) at the Tribhuvan University Cricket Ground, Kirtipur, on Thursday.
Chasing a target of 171 runs, set by Lumbini, Pokhara’s openers Andries Gous and Dinesh Kharel delivered a clinical chase, finishing the game in just 16.5 overs. Gous was the star of the show, hammering an impressive 104 runs off just 54 balls, becoming the first player in the ongoing NPL to score a century. His innings was a thrilling display of aggressive batting, including 12 fours and 5 sixes. Kharel provided strong support at the other end, scoring a well-made 61 off 39 balls, with 4 fours and 3 sixes.
This win was not only historic because of Gous’ century, but it also marked the first time in NPL history that two players scored half-centuries in a single innings without losing a wicket. Pokhara’s flawless chase underlined their dominance and set a new benchmark in the competition.
Earlier in the match, Lumbini Lions had won the toss and opted to bat first, posting 170-5 in their 20 overs. Captain Rohit Paudel played a captains’ knock, top-scoring with 95 runs off 59 balls, featuring 10 fours and 4 sixes. His partnership with Tom Moores, who contributed a solid 45 off 38 balls, formed the backbone of Lumbini’s total. The pair put on a crucial 110-run stand, which gave Lumbini a competitive total.
Despite Paudel’s brilliant innings, the Lumbini bowlers couldn’t find a way to break the partnership between Gous and Kharel, with Pokhara’s openers finishing the chase with ease.
This result gave Pokhara Avengers their first win of the tournament, while Lumbini Lions, having played two matches so far, remain winless.
With this historic victory, Pokhara not only set a new record but also made a powerful statement in the NPL, demonstrating their firepower and composure in chasing down a challenging total.
