In a significant crackdown, Nepalese authorities have apprehended four Indian nationals for allegedly running an illegal betting operation during the ongoing Nepal Premier League (NPL). The arrests took place at the Tribhuvan International Cricket Ground in Kirtipur, where the highly anticipated cricket tournament has been unfolding since last Saturday. This news was reported by The Kathmandu Post.
Details of the Arrests
The accused have been identified as Suman Ghosh from Kolkata, Amit Yadav from Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh, and Sumanth Kumar and Brajesh Kumar from Saharsa, Bihar. According to the Central Investigation Bureau (CIB), these individuals were found using online betting platforms, including Sports Baji and Probo, to facilitate gambling activities directly from the cricket ground.
Seizure of Evidence
During the operation, police confiscated six mobile phones and four Indian Aadhaar cards from the suspects, adding weight to their involvement in the illegal betting scheme. The seizure of these items is now being used as part of the ongoing investigation into their activities.
Enforcement of Nepal’s Betting Laws
SP Hobindra Bogati, the spokesperson for the CIB, confirmed that authorities are diligently working to ensure that Nepal’s strict anti-betting laws are upheld. The arrests highlight the challenges posed by illegal gambling activities that often accompany high-profile sporting events. The investigation is expected to continue as authorities seek to uncover any broader networks involved in unauthorized betting.
The incident underscores the importance of maintaining integrity in the sport and enforcing regulations to prevent illegal activities that could tarnish the reputation of events like the Nepal Premier League. As the tournament continues, officials remain vigilant to deter further violations and protect the interests of players and spectators alike.
